Chapter Sixteen
âInteresting to see you here, Lenna,â Alasdair said, a menacing grin plastered on his rugged face.
I didnât move. Unsure of what I could possibly say.
âHow did you get here?â the purple fae said to a confident-looking Alasdair.
âAm I not welcome?â He opened his mouth in mock surprise.
âThis is no place for fae of the water.â
âI agree.â He studied his surroundings, looking completely unimpressed. âHowever, I have reason to believe one of my water kin has been here. Delphinium, has your dear cousin returned to her second home?â Alasdair was speaking to the fae in purple.
âAlasdair. You are not welcome here, amongst the Flora clan.â She stood tall.
âBut we are family after all. Your cousin is my dear niece.â
Delphinium didnât falter. âShe is not here,â she said, even more sternly than before.
âAh, but this half fae is. What a sheer coincidence. She bears quite the resemblance to our dear Aster, does she not?â Alasdairâs tone was playful, Delphiniumâs wasnât.
âIâve no idea what you are implying. Aster has been recluse for decades.â
âIâm implying that my sisterâs daughter isnât quite the recluse you claim. I am implying that this half witch may be her blood. Why else is she here?â He gestured toward me.
âI am searching for my mother.â I spoke up. âBut her name isnât Aster. Itâs Evelyn.â
âThere are no missing fae by the name of Evelyn, my dear child. And Iâve met with the only two fae in this dimension with a name sounding similar. Neither abandoned a child. They swore it on their own light.â
I looked at Alasdair, and then to Delphinium. Her eyes confirmed his words.
âYou have her eyes,â Alasdair said. âAnd she had my sisterâs eyes. The same green color that my twinâs eyes were, similar to mine but darker. I see you, Lenna. You are my blood. Your mother abandoned you just as she abandoned her duty.â
Horror struck my body. This cruel fae claimed to be my kin. My motherâs uncle. And she was accused of fleeing her duty. What had that been, exactly? Was she really the girl in the fairy tale? And did that make Alasdair the cruel uncle?
My mind was spinning with so many thoughts that I began to feel faint.
âDelphinium, bring me Aster when she returns. This realm reeks of her. I know she has been here. I can sense her magic.â He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. âItâs still strong. Good. Time remains for her to meet her destiny.â
âWhat destiny?â I asked.
âThat isnât for you to know.â He spoke to me as if I was some annoying child asking questions beyond my comprehension. âYou were better off without her. She will only disappoint you. Aster thinks of no one but herself.â His eyes were dark with rage.
âAnd who are you thinking of?â I challenged.
âI am thinking of the entire fae population. Do not question my loyalty. I shall be kingâthe survival of the fae is all I care about.â My question had enraged him even more.
âDoes that include me?â
âYes,â he said through gritted teeth.
